Thrilling performance at 5 Aside Spectacle

It was all or nothing as the men and women's teams from Tshwane locked horns in the Soccerex Diski 5 soccer tournament hosted at the Eersterus Stadium at the weekend. The event saw soccer clubs affiliated with the Tshwane Local Football Associations participating in the 5-a-side tournament that will see the winners going through to vie for the number one spot in Gauteng at the finals of the Soccerex Football Festival in Sandton on November 28 th and 29 th respectively.

In the ladies competition Halleluya Angels from Winterveld demolished everything in sight to book their place in the final, scoring an impressive average of at least 5 goals per game. Despite their outstanding display, the Angels were disappointingly brushed aside with a closely competed 3-2 loss to the Hawks from West End in the final match. The Hawks had had a modest campaign leading up to their victory in the final, and will now go through to compete at the finals during the Football Festival ahead of the game between the Africans and European legends.

The men's event was a fiercely competed affair but ultimately saw Barcelone from Eersterus and Delfos from Pretoria overcome their opponents to set up a contest in the final. Delfos won the match 6-5 in penalties after failure by both sides to outplay the other in the field.

The tournament, which is part of the Soccerex World Football Convention, aims to encourage youth participation in sport. The five aside is based on the "street soccer" style which is well known in the South African soccer circles and its popularity has given birth to many professional players. Through creative and skillful players, as Gauteng, the tournament will definitely take the "street soccer" culture to the world during the Soccerex.  Winners of the tournament will receive trophies and medals as well as coaching clinics from the David Beckham Academy.
