MEC: Barbara Creecy
Grew up in Johannesburg and studied at Wits University , where she became involved in the anti-apartheid student movement in the 1970s. She became involved in the students' press union as a journalist in the anti-apartheid movement, and ANC underground structures. She currently serves on the Provincial Executive Committee of the ANC in Gauteng where she is responsible for political education.
Creecy was first elected to the Gauteng Legislature in 1994, and became Chairperson of the Social Welfare Committee in 1996. From 1999 to 2000 she served as Deputy Chief Whip of the ANC. In February 2001 she was appointed Chairperson of the Education Committee and served in that capacity until April 2004.
Before joining the Legislature, she worked for a non-governmental organisation which specialised in organisational development of trade unions and community-based organisations. Prior to this she worked for the civic desk of the United Democratic Front. She has extensive experience as an adult educator, community field worker and organisational development specialist.
Creecy recently completed a Masters Degree in Public Policy and Management at London University.
