Commonwealth Games Baton visits Gauteng
Gauteng also got a chance to get its hands on the Queen's Baton Relay for the Commonwealth games in October later this year. As part of the Commonwealth member state tour it (baton) toured South Africa from 9 to 13 January with Gauteng officially receiving it on the 12 th .
From 29 October 2009 until 340 days later at the Opening Ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi on 03 October 2010 the baton will be on tour. During the tour it will visit the homes of one third of the world's population and cover a distance in excess of 190,000 Kilometers. It will travel for 240 days through other 70 nations of the Commonwealth, before spending 100 days visiting all the capital cities in India's 28 states and seven union territories.
Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Nelisiwe Mbatha-Mtimkulu had the pleasure of receiving the baton on behalf of the people of Gauteng before it toured parts of Ekurhuleni and the City of Johannesburg.
This was the second touchdown of Gauteng after it had arrived a few days earlier through the OR Tambo Airport before its tour of Durban, Cape Town and Mangaung (Bloemfontein).
During the Gauteng leg led by the MEC the baton toured the OR Tambo Memorial in Wattville, Hector Peterson Memorial and the Nelson Mandela Museum in Orlando, the Orlando Stadium, the SAFA house and the Olympic House (housing SASCOC).
Athletes from South Africa will be chosen to participate in the Commonwealth and those from Gauteng will be expected to live up to the motto of Home of Champions and bring back more medals.
