Let me start by extending my personal congratulations to "Bafana Bafana" for their 3-2 win over Cameroon, the LOC for the successful Confederations Cup Launch and for some of the PSL clubs who have done us very proud at the SoccerEx Exhibition stands.

Football is certainly a "beautiful game" which has also grown into a global and highly visible business. Football clubs have become brands, and fans, as customers, are intensely loyal to their chosen club and football stars. Brand merchandising is an integral part of growing a brand.

The Gauteng Provincial Government is therefore very privileged to be a partner together with SAFA and Slam to launch into the market the first fully fledged range of official licensed "Bafana Bafana" brand merchandise.

We hope together to galvanize the patriotic support of all South Africans behind our National Team and to grow the fan base for "Bafana Bafana" ahead of 2010. Home advantage plays an important role in any World Cup and we need to use this to ensure "Bafana Bafana" is successful in proceeding through to the final rounds of Fifa's 2010 World Cup.

The Bafana brand is one that we that can all associate with and be proud of both on and off the field of play. This particular range was conceptualised by Slam, a Gauteng based company and will all be manufactured locally by 2010.

Gauteng is home to 40% of South Africa's creative economy and fashion and is one of the key drivers inspiring countless activities and providing employment in allied industries. To SAFA and SLAM, well done for this initiative which builds our love for football.

To all our visitors from across the country, continent and the world, it's only fitting that Bafana Bafana's brand merchandise is launched here in Gauteng - The Home of Champions and the preferred home of competitive sport.

What can we say....... It starts here!
